"A viewer's first impression is of abstract designs, since the sketches don't look like anything familiar. But more patient viewing reveals glimpses of another world -- broken, fragmentary scenes from the artist's unusual childhood.

Mr. Morgan was born into a family of circus acrobats, and until entering college, he traveled the United States and Canada performing acrobatics with his father and three brothers. He began performing at the age of 9 months, ''when he was strapped into a bucket atop a pole balanced on his father's forehead,'' according to an exhibition wall label. This was evidently useful training for his later years as a ''sway pole'' acrobat, which involves swinging, balancing and even hanging upside down on the top of a 60- to 120-foot-high swaying steel pole."
